London Routemasters in Tokyo
Thanks to Ant Davis who was stunned to find not one, but two, Routemasters on a visit to Tokyo this week. Apparently over fifty Routemasters went to Japan, more to any other country except Canada! Ant lived in London for many years, but is now based in California, but has yet to find a Routemaster out there, though he did send us a picture of a Lodekka in Seattle a few years ago! The Routemaster on the left in Shibuya looks to be RM2014 (ALM14B) though Ian's Bus Stop website says 2014 was scrapped in 1992. Notice the offside doors on the lower and UPPER! decks. These may be emergency exits required under safety regulations, but Japan drives on the same side of the roads as in the UK so they are not needed for normal boarding. The Routemaster on the right is RML2486 (JJD486D) which passed to Centrewest on privatisation, later transferred to the First Glasgow fleet in 2003. It was sold for preservation in 2007 but exported to Greece the following year. It found its way back to the UK with the London Bus Company and sold again for preservation in 2012, but ended up being bought by Ocean King in Tokyo in 2014. It may still be with them, seen by Ant as a shop outside the Tokyo Tower.
We have thousands of pictures to choose from for our Picture of the Week but you are welcome to send in your own. If we do not feature it here, it may appear later in our picture gallery.
