On May 26th 2005 there was a major incident on the M40 when a north bound car transporter
caught fire, closing the motorway. Chaos ensued for several hours froaround 5.00pm
onwards. Whilst Oxford "espress" services diverted via the M4 and A34, Tubes needing to
call at Lewknor endured the jams. This Skyliner is seen leaving the M40 at Junction 4 to
head into High Wycombe and along the A40. The Handy Cross junction is notorious for jams
and requires police on all 7 entrance roads to the roundabout above the motorway to prevent
frustrated motorists ignoring the traffic lights and grid locking the roundabout by blocking
access to all 7 exits. That evening at one time there were 8 entrances and 6 exits to the
roundabout as the police used the northbound M40 entry slip road to get traffic off the M40!

in Wycombe. The jam stretched for miles!
