British manufacturer Dennis is the only surviving chassis maker from the British bus industry, probably because it avoided being swallowed into the Leyland empire. Compared to Leyland it was a small scale manufacturer and probably better known for its dustcarts and more glamorous fire engines. It had success with the Loline model, based on the Bristol Lodekka and built under licence to sell to the non-nationalised bus sector in the sixties. The doubledeck successor, the Dominator, appeared on the scene some years after Loline production had ceased and Dennis had all but disappeared from bus building. This had several loyal followers and doubtless gave the company encouragement to develop its all conquering Dart singledecker. In recent years the company went through a series of acquisitions and bankruptcies but has now emerged as part of the successful Alexander Dennis company, responsible for the chassis elements of the leading Enviro range.
