Toorak cable car set
Cable cars were a feature of Melbourne's streets for over fifty years. Unlike those still running with MUNI in San Francisco Melbourne's cars entailed two coupled units. In this April 2007 picture is the lead unit, the grip car, 28, in open configuration known as the "dummy". The trailer behind, 256, is enclosed. The pair are lettered for the Queensberry Road to Toorak service.

Hawthorn Duncan & Fraser tram 8
Built in 1916 by Duncan & Fraser in Adelaide this was car 8 in the Hawthorn Tramsways Trust fleet and operated originally from the sheds in which it is now preserved. The body design is "Californian" and echoes that of MUNI's surviving Californian Street cable cars, but this car was electrically powered via a Brill motor. When Melbourne's various private and municipal tram operations were consolidated in 1920 under the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board it became part of the M-Class. It lasted until as fleet number 114 until it, with others, was sold for further service in Bendigo as their car 3. Retired in 1956 it joined the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria in 1963 and was housed in Malvern Depot awaiting restoration. So in 1992 the Victorian State Government finally restored it at Preston Workshops.
