Oxford South Midland AEC Reliance Weymann 618
At least ten years old at the time, this Weymann bodied AEC Reliance, 618 (AJO618C) was working the London - Oxford express from Gloucester Green. Definitely not in the same league as the Bristol coaches. It had been repainted in South Midland livery but still kept its dual purpose bus seats. In 1972 one of these presented itself for a journey from Slough to Worcester. Fortunately it was unwell by the time we reached Oxford and we pulled into the small South Midland Botley Road depot and had no other option but to swap it for one of the luxury Plaxton Elite bodied Bristol RELH coaches reserved for the 1972 tour programme. What a contrast!

The last new coaches for the London service in South Midland colours were a trio of the new look ECW body on Bristol RELH6G chassis of which this is the last of the last, 73 (GBW73L) believed to be seen in Maidenhead. Subsequent deliveries were impressive ECW coach seated doubledeckers in NBC dual purpose livery.
