The long awaited new G class trams broke cover this week. One hundred of these Alstom Flexity 2 have been ordered from the Canadian company, who have taken over Bombardier, who supplied the previous E class trams. The F class category has not been used, possibly to avoid complaints along the lines of "where's the F*** tram"! The trams are being assembled at a facility in Dandenong. This one is seen at the new purpose built facility at Maidstone with units set to start work on routes 19, 57 and 59. The 19 currently uses five section Siemens Combino cars and the 57 the rigid Z class, with the 59 in between with B class step entrance two section trams. A lot of car relocation is expected as the units destined to leave the fleet are from the rigid Z and A classes. The 58, which currently uses a mix of E, Z and B class trams ought to get the Combinos, but as Yarra Trams cannot schedule routes with huge common sections so they do not follow each other along the tracks, then leave a gap in service before another pair comes along, who knows. A visit to the Maidstone depot around Christmas time showed the impressive new facility deserted. This Thursday two G class were visible - and an E class. Apparently route trials are under way and this unidentified unit - seen through the zoom lens - has probably been venturing on to the streets. Only now is work afoot to adapt some tram stops for the new low floor models, particularly on the 57 route, which is rumoured to being diverted along Swanston Street and beyond rather than terminating at the Elizabeth Street Flinders Station stop.
