Saturday night into Sunday morning parts of the city of Melbourne are transformed into vivid colours with animated scenes projected on to many of the city's landmarks for twelve hours. This is White Night and there is also a variety of visual arts and performances around the city. The main city thoroughfare, Swanston Street, is closed to traffic, including the city's trams - shortly after dark it is so crowded that it is difficult to traverse as a pedestrian, let alone in a tram. The tram and rail network operates all night long with most cross city routes operating in two halves. One route that can cross is the premium 96 route from St Kilda to East Brunswick operated by the new Bombardier E class trams. It is diverted north to La Trobe Street from its usual Bourke Street haunt. Car 6009 is seen at the La Trobe/Victoria junction adjacent to the Melbourne Museum Plaza, where the Museum provided a backdrop to audio visual presentation through the seasons. Coloured lights illuminating the path to the Museum can be seen on the right. A projection on the National Gallery of Victoria depicted Melbourne through the ages culminating in a scene with green and cream Z class trams whizzing along the streets with the occasions left hand drive (!) blue bus.
