APRIL

1 Cobham Bus Museum 34th annual Bus & Coach Gathering at new venue Longcross Test Track and former Ministry of Defence proving ground, Chobham Lane, KT16 0EE. By road, leave M25 jct11 from south or jct13 from north, or M3 jct3. Entrance is off the B386 Chertsey Road/Longcross Road at a roundabout just north of where the road passes under the M3. Follow the special road signs to the event. Many sales stands and refreshment stalls will be provided and a frequent bus service will connect with Woking Station. Museum buses will provide rides around the two-mile test circuit. Longcross has parking for thousands of cars and a display area for over 300 buses and coaches. All visiting buses and coaches are welcome, no fees are charged and no pre-booking required. Please note that the museum at Cobham will NOT open on this day.

7/8 Kirkby Stephen & Brough Classic Commercial Vehicle Rally. Displays at Kirkby Stephen East station yard, Market Square, Co-op car park (Sunday only) and Auction Mart, plus Grand Prix Truck Stop, Brough, with vehicle movements. Free classic bus service between each site (they are about five miles apart). Opportunity for shopping in town centres and at special two-day farmers’ market in Brough.

7-9 Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum Easter Trolley Days and (Sunday only) Morris Minor Rally 11.00-17.00. Admission: £5 adults, £3 concessions, £15 family ticket (two adults and up to four concessions). Free parking. Free bus from Doncaster Interchange (Monday only). 12.30, returns 16.00.

7-9 Lincoln Open Day at Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum. 10.30-17.00. Sales stands, refreshments, variety of buses and coaches on free bus services from Lincoln railway station and local park-&-ride from the Moorland Centre, Tritton Road. Parking at museum is very limited. Admission £4 adults (includes programme and bus working timetable), accompanied children free.

14/15 St Helens Widnes Weekend 10.00-17.00 at North West Museum of Road Transport. Celebrating operations of Widnes Corporation and Halton Transport with appropriate vehicles on free bus service. Special photographic journeys throughout both days will follow part of former 35 route to/from Widnes town centre.

15 Bishops Waltham, Hants. Third charity open day 10.00-16.00 at Brijan Tours, The Coach Station, Abbey Mill (B2177 Wickham-Winchester road) with preserved and contemporary bus display and stalls. 15 Carshalton, London Running Day, 11.00-17.00. Free vintage bus services over London Transport routes between Sutton, Mitcham, Carshalton, Belmont, Wallington and Croydon, broadly as these routes were run on a Sunday in 1967. Most services operated with RTs, RFs, RLHs and Routemasters, but 1970s Bristol LHs will also operate the 80A (Sutton-Belmont).

21/22 Keighley. Bus Museum St George’s Day Weekend. Saturday display of museum buses in 700-year-old market centre by kind permission of Keighley Town Council, with Morris dancing, local produce, craft and memorabilia stalls. Sunday rides on Town Tour of Museum of Rail Travel, Ingrow Loco, Cliffe Castle, Leisure Centre and East Riddlesden Hall using (subject to availability) a newly restored heritage Yorkshire bus.

22 Crich Tramway Village, Derbyshire. Countdown to D-Day. Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Normandy landings. Trams run until 22.00 on Sunday. Reduced rates for visitors in 1940s costume.

22 East Grinstead. 13th Classic bus running day — probably the biggest London Transport-based one in the south of England — radiating from King Street bus station in conjunction with the Bluebell Railway.

22 Manchester Museum of Transport London Bus Day. Gathering of Routemasters and other old London buses. Free rides possible.

22 Middlesbrough. Eighth Teesside Vintage Running Day. Twelve vintage buses on four free routes between Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge, Middlesbrough bus station and Stockton High Street, plus vintage coach trip into North Yorkshire. Stalls. Organised by The 500 Group.

22 Wald/Bauma, Switzerland. Oldtimer Buses, including (subject to availability) preserved Swiss post buses, will operate in service between 08.20 and 18.15. The timetable has been arranged so all the different buses may be sampled and connections with regular public transport are possible at Wald, Gibswil, Hinwil and Bauma railway stations. It is possible to walk part of the route and coffee and food are available at most stops. Fares are SFr5 (approximately £2) single, SFr40 all-day, SFr20 morning and SFr30 afternoon.

28 Cultra, Co. Down. 35th Irish Transport Trust Annual Bus & Coach Rally. Main Car Park of the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum. 09-30-17.00. Preserved and modern buses take part in driving tests, vehicle judging,and timed road run of about 40 miles around Belfast and North Down. No charge to visit the rally, but normal charge will apply for admission to the museum.
